Nissan Utes D21/D22, D40 and NP300
Since 2005 Nissan have sold three different Utes under the Navara name with the distinction being either D21 & D22, D40 or NP300 as the vehicle identifier.
1987-2015 : D21/D22
2005-2015 : D40
2015-on : NP300
D21 & D22 Navara
The D21 Navara was built up until 1997. The D22 Navara has been sold in Australia ever since and was available until 2015 in some body formats. As far as tow bar fitting goes there is no distinction between D21 and D22.
If your Navara was built prior to 2005 it will be a D21/D22. After this date you could have either a D22 or D40 so read on if you are not sure what you have.
The D21/D22 is smaller than the D40. The easiest way to identify the D22 compared to the D40 is the shape of headlight unit and wheel arches. On the D22 the light just wraps around the corner of the wing. In the D40 the light unit is larger and meets up with the larger wheel arch mouldings.

D40 Navara
The D40 Navara was introduced in 2005 and is larger than the D22. It was sold until April 2015 when it was replaced with the Navara NP300.
Note the difference in headlights/wheel arches with the D22
